OpGen, Inc. Announces Maryland Expansion, Appoints Larry Wellman as Vice President, Human Resources

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland (August 7, 2008) - OpGen, Inc., a leader in single molecule DNA analysis, today announced a major expansion in Maryland that will create more than 80 jobs over the next two years. As a significant component of that expansion, Larry Wellman has joined the company as Vice President, Human Resources. This expansion and new appointment will help accelerate the company’s global business plan.

Wellman, who reports to CEO Noel Doheny, is responsible for talent acquisition, retention, rewards and development strategies. “I am pleased to add a human resources executive of Larry’s talent and experience to the OpGen management team,” commented Noel Doheny. “Larry’s experience, energy and vision will assist us in assembling a team that will successfully implement the company’s growth initiatives.”

Prior to joining OpGen, Mr. Wellman served as Vice President, Human Resources for Digene Corporation (now Qiagen), where he led the organization through rapid and significant growth both domestically and internationally. Mr. Wellman has held human resources management positions in a variety of industries including medical diagnostics, information technology and direct marketing.

Wellman holds an MBA in Finance and a B.S. degree in Industrial Relations, both from Indiana University.

OpGen has leased a facility at 708 Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg where it will locate its Optical Mapping Service laboratory, R&D and Manufacturing functions and the company’s executive offices. This facility will complement the company’s current activities in Madison, Wisconsin. OpGen will develop and provide services and systems from this new facility in an ISO certified environment.

About OpGen

OpGen is commercializing a novel single molecule DNA analysis technology, "Optical Mapping", for rapid identification and analysis of microorganisms. The system can be used to obtain detailed genetic information with no requirement for prior sequence data, PCR, cloning or probes. Applications of the new commercial systems include clinical microbial analysis, forensic microbiology and the development of novel molecular diagnostic products. OpGen’s investors include CHL Medical Partners, Highland Capital Partners, Versant Ventures, In-Q-Tel and Mason Wells.
