Noel Doheny, CEO
Noel Doheny joined OpGen as the Chief Executive Officer, January 2008. Noel brings to the company significant experience for leading and managing teams to discover, develop, and introduce diagnostic products that make a difference to the customer and the patient.
Prior to joining the OpGen Team, Noel most recently served as Senior Vice President for the Molecular Diagnostics Division of Affymetrix Inc. a leader in the microarray genetic technologies. During his tenure, Noel led efforts to create a CLIA compliant services laboratory for array analysis, introduced new tools for copy number analysis pertinent to inherited disease applications, and formed partnerships to create a broad portfolio of cancer assays. Prior to Affymetrix, Noel served as VP of Molecular Diagnostics and a member of the Executive Committee at Qiagen, a leading provider of DNA and RNA sample and assay technologies, where he led Qiagen’s entrance into infectious pathogen assays through a series of strategic acquisitions. Prior to Qiagen, Noel served as the President of BioStar Inc. (later known as ThermoBioStar) a point-of-care infectious disease diagnostics company where he led the commercial development and market introduction of numerous new POC assays. Noel also brings 16 years diagnostics experience with CIBA Corning, now Siemens Diagnostics, in the areas of blood chemistry, and point-of-care coagulation fields.
Noel has undergraduate degrees in Biology and Chemistry from West Virginia University and completed graduate work in Biochemistry at Georgetown University.
Colin W. Dykes, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer
Colin joined OpGen as the Chief Scientific Officer in September 2002. Since joining the company, he has led the company’s Scientific and Business Development programs and has served a major role in raising over $30m in private equity financing. Colin brings to the company over 20 years of expertise in the application of molecular biology and genomics technologies within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
Previously, Colin served as Vice-President of Genomics at Variagenics, a Cambridge, MA-based pharmacogenomics company (now Nuvelo), where his duties included building a pharmacogenomics service business with Pharma/biotech partners and raising capital, including a successful IPO in July 2000. Prior to Variagenics, Colin spent 16 years in research and development with Glaxo (now GSK), where he established Glaxo's UK-based human genetics and genomics programs during the mid-90's, resulting in the identification of genes involved in susceptibility to diseases such as migraine, psoriasis and early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Colin also pioneered the use of high-density cDNA arrays for gene expression profiling.
Colin obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from University College, Cardiff, and spent four years in post-doctoral research at Vanderbilt University, before joining Glaxo.
John Henkhaus, Vice President, Operations
John joined OpGen as Vice President of Operations in February 2002. John brings to the company over 10 years of technical management experience with expertise focused in genomics technologies, bioinformatics and microbiology. Additionally, John’s expertise extends to migrating manual laboratory workflow environments to high-throughput manufacturing processes, incorporating automation, cGMP and information management systems. John, with his team, has responsibility for all laboratory operations, information technology and quality systems management.
Prior to joining OpGen, John served as Senior Production Manager for Incyte, a pioneer in the emerging genomics industry, where he managed five departments providing genomic services and bioreagents to the broader life science industry. Prior to Incyte, John supervised research teams engaged in multiple sequencing projects including the Human Genome Project at Washington University.

Mike Fitzpatrick, Vice President, Sales and Commercial Development
Mike joined OpGen as Vice President of Sales and Commercial Development in August 2008. Mike brings over 25 years of experience in sales and executive sales management. He has built and managed global sales and support teams. At OpGen he is responsible for refining the go-to-market strategy, establishing commercial processes and deploying field based distribution channels for sales and support.
Prior to joining OpGen, Mike has held numerous executive sales positions most recently at Codon Devices where he built the initial global field team. Prior to Codon, Mike spent 20 years with Applied Biosystems where he was Vice President of Global Key Accounts, Vice President of Sales for the Molecular Biology Division and Vice President of the Americas. He has been responsible for revenues exceeding $1 billion across a global customer base in the areas of academic research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology and applied markets.
Mike has a degree in Microbiology from the University of Maryland, College Park and extensive course work in sales management programs.
Ed Andrews, Vice President, Product Development
Ed joined OpGen as Vice President of Product Development in May of 2006 and brings to Opgen extensive experience in new product design, development, manufacturing and business leadership. At OpGen, he leads a talented team of engineers and scientists working on instrumentation and lab-on-card based systems.
Prior to joining OpGen, Ed was a Plant Manager for Sanmina-SCI Corporation, a world-wide provider of out-sourced contract manufacturing services. Prior to this, Ed was an Executive Vice President at GDXI, an ECG services business. Here he led the development of FDA approved, CE certified, ECG telediagnostic instruments. Before co-founding GDXI, Ed spent seventeen years with GE Healthcare in a number of product design and management roles across a spectrum of medical devices including patient monitoring products, Cardiac, Fluoroscopic, and Digital Subtraction Angiographic X-ray systems, CT Scanners, and Ultrasound systems. While at GE, he was granted six patents for his medical product innovations.
Ed holds a BS degree in Electrical/Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee and has participated in numerous business and management training programs.
Larry Wellman, Vice President, Human Resources
Larry joined OpGen as Vice President, Human Resources in July 2008. Larry is responsible for talent acquisition, retention, rewards, performance management and development strategies. Larry brings to the company extensive experience leading organizations through rapid and significant growth both domestically and internationally. His commitment to talent development ensures the continual improvement and growth of both the individual and the organization.
Prior to joining OpGen, Larry served as Vice President, Human Resources for Digene Corporation (now Qiagen), a medical diagnostics firm that develops, manufactures and markets proprietary DNA and RNA tests for the detection, screening and monitoring of human diseases. During his tenure, the company grew from $17 million to over $200 million in revenue, significantly increasing the manpower demands to support that intense growth. Prior to Digene, Larry was Director, Human Resources for two established companies that opened new operations in the mid-west, Bear Creek Corporation, and prior to Bear Creek, Atlas Editions. Larry’s breadth of “people” experience is assembled from diverse industries including, biotechnology, high-tech, service-based and manufacturing environments, each contributing to his solid understanding of employee relations, resource planning and human capital management.
Larry holds an MBA in Finance and a BS in Human Resources, both from Indiana University.
Richard Moore, MD, PhD, Vice President, Diagnostic Systems
Rich joined OpGen as the Vice President of Diagnostic Systems in October 2008. Rich brings to the company significant experience in product development and molecular infectious disease diagnostics. Rich currently leads Systems Integration and Assay Development efforts for infectious disease products.
Prior to joining OpGen, Rich served as the Director of Research, Technology Development, and Systems Integration for the Diagnostic Systems unit of Becton Dickinson (BD). At BD, Rich was involved in the development of several instrumented diagnostic systems in including ProbeTec ET and Viper. Prior to BD, Rich worked in the point of care diagnostics group at IGEN, now BioVeris.
Rich obtained an MD and a PhD in Cellular Immunology from University of Maryland at Baltimore and a BS in Chemical and Nuclear Engineering from University of Maryland, College Park.
Robert Gibbs, Senior Director, Marketing
Robert joined OpGen in November of 2008. He brings 15 years of experience in the clinical diagnostics market.
Most recently Robert held the position of Director of Marketing for Third Wave Technologies where he led the launch of their FDA cleared Cystic Fibrosis product line. Before that he was Director of Marketing for LipoScience, a venture capital based CLIA laboratory. At LipoScience, the commercial organization significantly grew clinician demand for their cardiovascular diagnostic services, which led to critical strategic partnerships and the raising of additional funding. Robert started his career at Roche, a market leader in clinical diagnostics, where he spent eight years in various roles of increasing responsibility. His experience at Roche includes directing the $200 million molecular diagnostics viral load business and launching several key Accu-Chek blood glucose meters into the consumer diabetes market.
Robert received his BS in Biochemistry from the University of Richmond and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.
